The Open of Hand

Empty-handed I entered the world.
Barefoot I leave it.
My comings, my goings--
Two simple happenings
That got entangled.

(Kozan Ichikyo (1238-1360), Japanese Zen monk who wrote this poem on the morning of his death, laid down his brush and died sitting upright.)
